Friedrich Kunath

We were the one thing in the galaxy God didn't have his eyes on

April 3 – May 1, 2004
Los Angeles

Opening reception: Saturday, April 3, 6-8pm

Blum & Poe is pleased to present the first US solo exhibition of German born artist Friedrich Kunath. The exhibition will consist of new work in various media.

Kunath's art utilizes a personal style of romantic conceptualism, layering poetic phrases with poignant, often melancholy imagery.  The work embraces comedy and pathos, evoking universal feelings of love, hope, longing, and despair.

As the show's title suggests, themes of isolation and belonging, both physical and emotional, pervade the work. A video installation, consisting of a cube of nine monitors, track a shifting image of the artist as he travels the globe bounding from one location to the next. Lyrical themes carry on in the sculpture, including an anchor, a cube filled with rocks of chalk, and a large carved tear inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Kunath's light touch with materials is also deftly translated onto paper, canvas, as well as in prints and photographs.

Blum & Poe is located at 2754 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90034. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM.  If you have any questions, please contact Gabriel Ritter at 310 836 2062.
