Blum & Poe is pleased to present a selection of work by three painters for FIAC’s Online Viewing Rooms 2021, highlighting the alliance between three generations of artists who draw from Classical Art. Each artist’s practice looks at art historical canons in unique ways—Theodora Allen’s inspiration from early Symbolist painting, Anna Weyant’s interest in seventeenth-century Dutch painters, and March Avery’s education in American modernism—echo one another in this presentation. These artists share a commonality through their command of color: atmospheric blues for Allen, dark greens and neutrals for Weyant, and soft hues for Avery.

Theodora Allen’s new series of Machine Paintings presents the screw and the seed as essential kernels of nature and architecture. These paintings will be included in the artist’s first solo museum exhibition opening at Kunsthal Aarhus in May 2021. Titled Saturnine, the exhibition looks at the artist’s emblematic use of symbols that are culturally and emotionally versed, including the allegorical history of the ringed planet Saturn, from ancient myth and the Middle Ages through the present.

Following March Avery’s solo exhibition at Blum & Poe Los Angeles last year, this selection brings together Avery’s brushy paintings and watercolors made in the South of France, by the home where she and her family spent many summers. Showcasing intimate and poetic portrayals of her daily life, Avery’s works feature portraits of friends and family as well as land and seascapes dear to the artist.

Previewing Anna Weyant’s upcoming solo exhibition at Blum & Poe Los Angeles in March, this presentation is the first to exclusively focus on her meticulous graphite on paper drawings. Featuring young female characters trapped in uncomfortable adolescence, these works showcase the rigorous practice of the artist, apparent in her masterful treatment of supple flesh, delicate texture, light and shadow.
