Proposal for Monument in Friendship Park, Jacksonville, Florida

October 28 – December 2, 2000
Santa Monica

Opening reception: Saturday, October 27, 6-8pm

Blum & Poe is pleased to present a new installation by Sam Durant. "Proposal for Monument in Friendship Park, Jacksonville, Florida" is Durant's most ambitious sculptural project to date.

"Friendship Park: Center of Southern rock, mostly paved, site for Sunday jam sessions in the early 70's, place where Lynyrd Skynyrd watched Allman Bros. play. Project is based on Noguchi's methods of park design and proposals. History of area (cultural, political, economic, etc.) dictates elements in the plan. Arrange elements into harmonious whole (Zen garden aspect). Also incorporating Noguchi's stage design and sets for Martha Graham's dance performances (Frontier and Appalachian Spring). Dirt floor swamp shack, archetypal southern dwelling, backyard garden, Zen rock garden connected to primordial mass below - shacks to rocks to trash receptacle to outhouse to (southern) rock music, white trash, trash can, rock, organic to geometric, nature to architecture, landscape to stage." -Sam Durant, 2000
