Donation Match: The Underground Museum & Black Lives Matter

June 12, 2020

Dear community,

We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and the current uprising against systemic racism, police brutality and social and economic injustice. We demand the protection of Black lives and justice for the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade and many others. We recognize that the need for meaningful change is urgent and long overdue, and only underscored as we face the devastating and divisive effects of this global pandemic. In a committed effort toward reflection and evaluation, intentional learning (and unlearning), and earnest structural change, this week the gallery will be matching donations to two worthy organizations—The Underground Museum and Black Lives Matter Los Angeles.

The Underground Museum (The UM) is a non-profit arts and culture center operating out of three converted storefronts in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. It brings art and art experiences normally reserved for major institutions to diverse audiences for free. The UM upholds the belief that art is an essential part of a vibrant, just, and healthy society. It serves its neighbors, a low-to-moderate income community, and LA’s thriving creative community, with unwavering conviction that increasing access to art will inspire, educate, and transform lives.

Black Lives Matter is a global organization dedicated to eradicating white supremacy. Founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer, their mission is to build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. The original chapter of the global movement, Black Lives Matter Los Angeles (BLMLA)’s work includes non-violent direct action, policy work, movement building, strengthening alliances, community self-care, and creative engagement. Donate to Black Lives Matter Los Angeles here.

With gratitude for what you can give at this time, Blum & Poe pledges to meet donations up to $10,000 for The UM and BLMLA, respectively. Upon giving, please email your donation confirmation to Donations must be made by Friday, June 12, 12:00 pm Pacific Time. Blum & Poe does not guarantee the tax deduction status of these donations.

Sending well wishes,
