Chiho Aoshima: Mr.; Aya Takano
Published on the occasion of three solo exhibitions of work by Chiho Aoshima, Mr., and Aya Takano held at the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art, Sept. 24-Dec. 31, 2006.
Three young Japanese artists, Kaikai Kiki from the group led by Takashi Murakami, emerging on the international scene of contemporary art: Chiho Aoshima, Mr. and Aya Takano. Largely inspired by the Japanese culture and tradition, they create works that are resolutely part of the incredible vitality of Japan after the war, marked by the development of new technologies and manga. Virtuosos of drawing and painting, all three artists take us to a populated magical world of hybrid full color characters which, while joyful and fun at first glance, lead us quickly towards much more serious subjects including life, death and sex.
Features essays by Eleanor Heartney, Takashi Murakami, Jeff Rian and Katy Siegel.
